A recent study indicates that US households are now paying 62% more for drinking water compared to a decade ago, significantly outpacing inflation and grocery price increases. The analysis by Food & Water Watch examined billing data from the largest community water systems, revealing that water costs have risen faster than household incomes, particularly affecting low-income families.
The study highlights disparities between corporate and publicly owned water systems, with corporate utilities charging significantly higher rates. States like New Hampshire and Oregon have seen some of the steepest increases, raising concerns about affordability and access to clean water, especially for vulnerable communities.
