Thinktank Warns Against Cuts to Disability Benefits for Mental Health Conditions

Kaynak: The Guardian World - Yayin: 15 Oct 2026 02:01

The Resolution Foundation has cautioned that excluding individuals with anxiety, ADHD, or autism from receiving personal independence payments (PIP) would not yield significant financial savings and could hinder their employment opportunities. The thinktank criticized such proposals as overly simplistic and called for a comprehensive reform of the PIP system, which has seen a substantial rise in costs since its introduction in 2014.

Currently, PIP spending is projected to reach £28 billion this year, with forecasts suggesting it could rise to £34 billion by the decade's end. The Foundation highlighted that while some claimants may not face additional costs, the program plays a crucial role in enabling many disabled individuals to engage in work and community activities, emphasizing the need for a system that better addresses their diverse needs.
