England and Wales will see the establishment of specialist courtrooms dedicated to handling rape and serious sexual offence cases, a move welcomed by advocates as a significant step forward. The initiative includes a multimillion-pound funding boost to ensure that every crown court has at least one designated room within two years, along with fixed trial dates to reduce delays.
In addition to the new courtrooms, the Ministry of Justice plans to implement trauma-informed training for court staff and create a rape justice taskforce. These measures aim to improve the experience of survivors in the legal process and address the backlog of cases waiting to be heard in court.
