Alan Greer, a former police officer, was investigated for inappropriate conduct in 2002 and 2005, yet was accepted into Strathclyde Police in 2009. His history of offenses, including a formal caution, was known to vetting staff at the time of his recruitment. Greer took his own life in May while under investigation for serious sexual offenses, including multiple assaults on vulnerable women.
Police Scotland has identified at least 15 victims of Greer, with concerns that the actual number may be higher. The case has raised questions about the effectiveness of vetting processes and the potential for missed opportunities to prevent his recruitment and subsequent crimes.
