After the family expressed concerns about their son Hobie, who had a history of mental health issues, the police suggested they contact a locksmith instead of referring them to mental health services. Tragically, Hobie was found dead the following day.
The IOPC highlighted that the police should have conducted a more thorough risk assessment and provided better communication regarding their response. This incident raises questions about the effectiveness of the Right Care, Right Person (RCRP) policy, which aims to reduce police involvement in mental health crises.
