Renowned architect Peter Zumthor has completed a new gallery for the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, Switzerland, marking his first project in his hometown. The £110 million structure features handmade elements and a unique 'rammed concrete' design, reflecting Zumthor's commitment to craftsmanship and local materials. The gallery is part of a larger expansion that includes additional buildings aimed at enhancing visitor experience.
The Beyeler Foundation, known for its impressive collection of modern art, has been expanded to accommodate more visitors and provide new social spaces. Zumthor's design contrasts with the original structure by Renzo Piano, offering a more intimate atmosphere while maintaining a connection to the surrounding landscape and community heritage.
As the Beyeler Foundation expands, watch for how Zumthor's gallery influences visitor engagement and the museum's programming. The integration of social spaces may redefine art appreciation, inviting a broader audience to interact with both art and community.
