The number of available spaces in male prisons across England and Wales has reached its lowest point this year, prompting the Justice Secretary to address the issue in Parliament. The early release scheme, initiated in September, aims to alleviate overcrowding, with plans to release approximately 4,500 inmates starting in October.
In addition to the early release initiative, the government is considering converting laundry rooms into cells and holding some young offenders longer in youth institutions. Current prison capacity is reported at 97%, with ongoing discussions about further measures to manage inmate numbers.
