Under proposed changes by the Ministry of Justice, individuals convicted of murdering a partner or ex-partner could face sentences of up to 25 years, an increase from the current 15-year baseline. This adjustment aims to align domestic homicide penalties with those for other types of murder, particularly where a weapon is used with intent to kill.
The initiative responds to the significant proportion of domestic murders, predominantly affecting women, and is part of a broader effort to enhance protections against domestic violence. The changes are pending consultation with the Sentencing Council and are expected to be implemented soon.
