Sophie Price, a new mother, was denied hospital meals after giving birth because she was not breastfeeding. Despite her baby being in intensive care, the hospital classified her as no longer a patient and required her to purchase food during their three-week stay. The family reportedly spent over £1,000 on meals while caring for their critically ill daughter.
The Aneurin Bevan health board expressed regret over Sophie's experience and acknowledged the challenges faced by parents in such situations. They stated that while breastfeeding mothers receive meals, the policy does not extend to those using formula, which Sophie criticized as outdated and discriminatory.
