Jimmy McGovern, the writer of the BBC drama 'Time', expressed his dismay after visiting young offender institutions (YOIs) for research. He criticized the isolation policies that keep inmates confined for up to 23 hours a day, suggesting this allows staff to be inactive. McGovern's comments have sparked a response from the Prison Officers' Association, which defends the necessity of these measures for safety amid high violence levels in YOIs.
McGovern's insights could prompt a reevaluation of isolation practices in YOIs. As the new series airs, watch for public and political reactions that may influence policy changes, particularly regarding staff training and inmate rehabilitation efforts.
