£200m Trains Largely Unused as Full Service Delayed Until 2027

A fleet of tram-trains costing over £200 million remains mostly idle more than three years after the first unit was delivered. Transport for Wales (TfW) has indicated that full service may not be achieved until late 2027, significantly later than the initial 2022 target. Currently, less than half of the 36 trains have passed necessary testing due to various technical issues.

TfW's ambitious South Wales Metro project, which aims to modernize rail services, has faced multiple delays and rising costs. The project is seen as a crucial infrastructure development for the region, but ongoing reliability challenges with the tram-trains have raised concerns about its future effectiveness and efficiency.
