The Football Association has implemented a new 3v3 format for under-7s, reducing the previous 5v5 structure. This change aims to increase player engagement by allowing more touches of the ball and fostering enjoyment over competitiveness. The format eliminates goalkeepers and referees, encouraging active participation from all players.
Research conducted by the FA indicates that smaller team sizes can enhance decision-making and physical activity among young players. While the new format is designed to improve grassroots football, its long-term impact on player development remains to be seen.
Watch for how coaches adapt to the 3v3 format, particularly in managing player engagement and addressing concerns about dominant players. The FA's focus on enjoyment over competitiveness may reshape youth football culture, influencing future player development strategies.
