England experienced its wettest week in two years due to Storm Austen, with rainfall totals exceeding averages in many areas. However, despite this increase, much of the country remains in drought, particularly in southern regions where conditions are severe. Reservoirs are still critically low, with some at less than 20% capacity.
The Environment Agency indicates that while October's rainfall has improved conditions in some areas, it will require sustained above-average precipitation over the next several months to alleviate drought conditions. Without significant rainfall, the drought may persist into next year, particularly affecting regions like Devon and Cornwall.
