Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva faces Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil's presidential election first round. Lula, the incumbent president, seeks a fourth term, while Flávio is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, currently imprisoned for a coup plot. A candidate must secure over 50% of the votes to win outright; otherwise, a runoff will occur on October 25.
Polls indicate a tight race, with Minas Gerais being a crucial state historically linked to presidential victories. The new president will assume office on January 5, 2027.
