Comedian Vittorio Angelone has drawn criticism for a joke made about Rebecca Goodwin, a sexual assault survivor, during a podcast episode. Goodwin expressed her distress over being used as a punchline and stated that the comments contribute to a culture that trivializes sexual violence. Angelone has since apologized and reached out to Goodwin directly.
The remarks have prompted responses from organizations like Rape Crisis Northern Ireland, which emphasized the harmful impact of such jokes on survivors. Goodwin noted that the comments were made in a comedic context but highlighted the serious implications of making light of sexual violence.
This incident highlights the ongoing struggle against the trivialization of sexual violence in comedy. Watch for potential changes in how comedians approach sensitive topics and the role of public backlash in shaping discourse around survivor experiences.
