In August, Australia recorded over 27,000 electric vehicles (EVs) sold, marking the first time EV sales outpaced petrol cars. This shift, driven by rising fuel costs and new government policies, accounted for nearly 25% of new car sales, surpassing petrol and diesel vehicles. The introduction of a federal vehicle emissions standard has also contributed to the increase in available low and zero-emission models.
The Electric Vehicle Council noted a significant change in consumer preferences, with nearly 200 EV models now available. Officials emphasized the importance of accessible charging infrastructure to support this growing market and ensure consumer confidence, particularly in rural areas and for those without home charging options.
