A team from the European Southern Observatory has identified a debris disk surrounding the white dwarf J1328−1450, located 1,600 light-years from Earth. This disk consists of gas and dust remnants from the planetary system that once orbited the star, which has undergone significant transformation after exhausting its fuel.
The structure of the debris disk features two distinct rings, potentially shaped by surviving planetary bodies. These findings provide insights into the future of our solar system, as a similar process may occur when the sun transitions into a red giant and eventually a white dwarf in about 5 billion years.
