Proposals to ban smacking children in Northern Ireland have been removed from the Justice Bill currently under consideration. This decision leaves Northern Ireland alongside England as one of the few regions in the UK and Ireland where smacking is still permitted, despite calls for legal reform to align with international human rights standards.
The Justice Bill, introduced in September 2024, includes various reforms but does not address the legal defense of 'reasonable punishment' for parents. Advocates argue that the absence of a ban allows abusive behavior to be justified, while opponents express concerns about potential criminalization of parental discipline.
