The UK government has announced plans to clean up three significant illegal waste dumps located in Kent, Surrey, and West Yorkshire, which collectively contain approximately 22,000 tonnes of waste. Prime Minister Andy Burnham emphasized the need to address these toxic sites that have negatively impacted local communities for too long.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat waste crime, building on previous efforts by former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. A new group will coordinate efforts among regulators and law enforcement to tackle illegal dumping, while discussions are underway regarding enhanced powers for authorities to address fly-tipping more effectively.
