The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has urged the government to implement a 'social tariff' for energy bills, funded by a surcharge on banks. This initiative aims to assist low and middle-income households, with estimates suggesting that two-thirds of households could benefit from such a measure. TUC leader Paul Nowak emphasized the need for government action to alleviate inflation driven by energy costs.
Nowak also highlighted the importance of investment in public services and the economy, advocating for a review of tax policies to ensure wealth is adequately taxed. He expressed concerns over proposed immigration policy changes affecting care workers and called for a more thoughtful approach to labor shortages in the sector.
