Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has updated product information for several GLP-1 receptor agonists, including Ozempic and Mounjaro, due to a potential link to a rare eye disorder known as non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can lead to severe visual impairment, and patients are advised to seek immediate medical attention for sudden vision loss.
Despite the warning, the TGA does not recommend discontinuing these medications without consulting a healthcare provider. The regulator is continuing to monitor the situation, having identified 36 cases of NAION associated with these drugs.
Patients using GLP-1 drugs should monitor for sudden vision changes and consult healthcare providers immediately if they occur. As the TGA continues to assess the situation, keep an eye on updates regarding safety guidelines and any new research findings related to NAION.
