Chan Mathok Atak has received a prison sentence of two years and three months for piloting a dinghy that carried 165 migrants across the English Channel on July 23. Prosecutors highlighted the significant risk of injury or death posed to those on board due to the overcrowded vessel.
The court noted that this incident set a record for the largest number of migrants transported in such a manner, a record that has since been surpassed. Judge Sarah Counsell emphasized the seriousness of the offense, indicating that deportation could follow Atak's release.
