Rio Tinto is investing A$28 million to establish a 'toad containment zone' aimed at preventing the invasive cane toad from reaching the Pilbara region. This initiative, in collaboration with Curtin University, seeks to protect local wildlife and ecosystems from the toad's toxic effects.
The project will create a barrier across 7,500 square kilometers to limit the toad's access to water sources, which are crucial for its survival. The five-year plan is set to commence in 2027, addressing concerns over the potential decline of native species like the northern quoll and goanna lizard.
