OpenAI Introduces Text Watermarking for ChatGPT and Codex in EU

Source: The Verge - Published: 05 Oct 2026 21:08

OpenAI is launching an invisible, machine-readable watermarking feature called textGrain for ChatGPT and Codex, initially available only to users in the European Union. This move aligns with the EU's AI Act, and OpenAI claims that its watermarking technology performs comparably to other methods in the field.

While the watermarking will not be a global default at launch, API customers worldwide can opt in for watermarked outputs. OpenAI is also providing access to detection tools for approved researchers to evaluate text provenance, although the tool will not be publicly available at this time due to concerns about reliability.
