In Myanmar's Hpa-An, young men are increasingly fearful of abduction for military conscription as authorities intensify efforts to meet recruitment quotas. Reports indicate that plain-clothed junta members are forcibly taking individuals, particularly those aged 18 to 35, to bolster military ranks amid ongoing conflict with ethnic militias and pro-democracy groups. This situation has led to a pervasive atmosphere of anxiety among residents, who are advised to avoid going out after dark.
The junta's mandatory conscription law has reportedly resulted in the coercion of around 100,000 young recruits since early 2024. Allegations of corruption and human trafficking have emerged, with some individuals being sold into military service by local officials. The military's aggressive recruitment tactics reflect a desperate attempt to sustain its forces as the civil war continues, raising concerns about human rights violations and the impact on civilian life in Myanmar.
