Head coach Brian McDermott expressed disappointment over Smithies' injury but noted Watkins' strong performance with Leeds this season. Watkins will join the team in Perth ahead of their opening match against Tonga, although he will not participate in that game.
Watch for how Watkins adapts to the squad dynamics in Perth, especially given his experience. His presence could influence team morale and strategy in upcoming matches against France and Papua New Guinea, where his versatility may be crucial.
