The UK government has confirmed that up to 20 million households in England will receive a £100 energy payment starting in January. This initiative targets properties in council tax bands A to D, with funds sourced from an increase in bank taxes. However, many households may still face financial strain as energy bills are expected to rise significantly during the same period.
Students living in halls and those exempt from council tax will not receive the payment directly. Local authorities will be tasked with finding alternative methods to distribute funds to these groups, as the payment is linked to council tax accounts.
