Fears of a return to civil war in Ethiopia are rising following a new offensive by Tigrayan rebels, who have formed a coalition aimed at toppling Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival, which includes seven armed groups, has intensified fighting in the regions of Afar and Amhara, with reports of heavy artillery attacks and control over key towns and airports.
The renewed hostilities challenge the 2022 peace agreement that had previously quelled violence.
