Android and iPhone users can now send end-to-end encrypted text messages, with the feature starting to roll out in beta for those using the latest software. This encryption enhances privacy by protecting messages from interception during transit, a capability that has been available for iMessage since 2011 and for Android-to-Android communication since 2021.
The introduction of end-to-end encryption comes after years of requests from Google for Apple to adopt RCS messaging, which offers improved features over traditional SMS. Apple's support for RCS, prompted by regulatory pressures, aims to improve communication quality and user experience between the two platforms, addressing longstanding issues like group chat disruptions and multimedia sharing problems.
